Emergency electrician
Emergency electrician in London
An emergency electrician makes your electrics safe when there is a risk to people or property: a burning smell, sparking, water in fittings, a shock, or no power that is not a network cut. In London, check with neighbours and 105 first, then switch off at the main switch if it is safe and call us.

What happens, step by step
Making safe comes first. You are told what was found and what the repair takes before any repair starts.
- 01
Quick questions first
We ask what you can see and smell, whether anyone is hurt and whether the street has power. If it sounds like a network cut, we tell you to call 105 instead of booking a visit.
- 02
Make it safe
On arrival the electrician isolates the circuit or the whole supply if needed, checks for heat damage and makes sure nothing live is exposed.
- 03
Restore what can be restored
Healthy circuits are switched back on so you have lights, the fridge and heating controls while the faulty circuit stays off.
- 04
Find the cause and agree the repair
Testing narrows the fault down. You are told what was found and what the repair involves before any repair work starts.
- 05
Repair and test
The repair is made, the circuit is tested and you get the right certificate for the work done.
Is it an emergency or can it wait until morning?
Treat it as an emergency if there is any risk to people. That means a burning smell, smoke, sparks, a socket or switch that is hot to touch, water near electrics, exposed wires, or anyone feeling a shock. Losing all power in winter, or with someone at home who relies on medical equipment, is urgent too.
Some faults are a nuisance rather than a danger. One dead socket, a single light that will not come on, or a doorbell that has stopped can usually wait for a normal appointment, as long as nothing smells hot. If you are not sure, answer the quick questions on this page and we will tell you which it is.
The London Fire Brigade says it has attended 26,376 electrical fires in London since 2017. It lists scorch marks, flickering lights, hot plugs and sockets, and fuses or breakers that go for no obvious reason as signs of loose or dangerous wiring.
Check for a power cut before you call anyone
If the whole home goes dark, look outside. Are the street lights and your neighbours' windows off too? If so, it is almost certainly a fault on the network, and no electrician can fix it. Call 105, which is free, or check the UK Power Networks power cut map.
Most of London is supplied by UK Power Networks. Ealing, Hounslow and Hillingdon are served by SSEN, according to the Mayor's answer to the London Assembly. You do not need to know which: 105 routes you by postcode.
If only your home is off, look at the consumer unit (the fuse box). A switch in the down position means something inside your property has tripped it. Our page on no power in the house goes through the checks.
London homes and the faults they produce
London's housing shapes what goes wrong. The Valuation Office Agency counts 29% of the capital's homes as built before 1919 and 57% as flats. Older houses have usually been rewired in stages, so old and newer cable meet in floor voids and lofts. Electrical Safety First notes that black rubber cable was phased out in the 1960s, yet it still turns up in homes that have never had a full rewire.
Flats bring their own problems. A leak from the flat above can reach your lights. Hall lights and door entry run on a separate landlord supply. The cables that carry power up a block may belong to the network operator or the building owner. Part of an emergency visit is working out which side of the meter the fault is on, so the right person pays for the repair.
Checking who you let in
Anyone can call themselves an electrician. For notifiable work, such as a new consumer unit or a new circuit, the law in England says the electrician must be registered with a competent person scheme or the work must be notified to the council's building control. Ask to see their scheme registration and check it on the scheme's online register. For an EICR, ask what qualifications the inspector holds for inspection and testing.
Price
How the price is worked out
Agreed with you after a look at the job, before any repair starts.
What affects the price
Emergency work is priced on what the job needs. The main drivers are the time of day, how long the fault takes to find, and whether parts have to be fetched. We confirm the price after a look at the job and before any repair work starts.
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Making safe and first diagnosis | price confirmed after a look at the job |
| Fault finding on a hidden cable fault | quote on survey |
| Replacement sockets, switches or fittings | quote on survey |
| Repairs needing a consumer unit change | quote on survey |
No prices are shown on this site. Every job is priced after a look at it, by photo or a visit.
Questions
Emergency electrician: what people ask
Should I call an electrician or 105 first?
If your neighbours are off too, call 105 first because it is a network fault. If only your home is off, or there is a smell or sparks, an electrician is the right call.
Can you turn the power back on straight away?
Often yes for the healthy circuits. The faulty circuit stays off until the cause is found, because switching it back on can start a fire or cause a shock.
Do I need to be at home?
Yes, or someone over 18 who can give access to the consumer unit and the meter. In a block, the electrician may also need the meter cupboard key from the managing agent.
Will I get paperwork?
Yes. Repairs come with the right certificate for the work, such as a minor works certificate, and notifiable work comes with a building regulations compliance certificate.
